Howdy ya'll,

So ive been asking this on a couple of different truck boards with no response, and i figured i would turn to you seasoned veterans in racing/maintence.

So here's the deal, picked up an 00 Reg Cab Stepside 2wd silverado with a 4.8/5spd (New Venture Gear 3500) w/80,000 on the clock now.

Ran fine for awhile, then these past couple of weeks its been acting up. Clutch still seems to grab hard...yet im getting this wierd grinding/squeeking noise coming from the tranny area, whether its at idle after sitting overnight/after i run through the gears fairly hard, etc.

Im thinking its either: A. Throwout bearing, B. Front bearings...but i can't be sure since i'm not super experienced in tranny's.

Any advice from you guys? I'm driving it to SCC this friday, and hopefully driving it back home too...(40miles each way)

If you guys would like to help a guy who's trying to get a general idea about every section of a car that'd be greatly appreciated.

Also if you guys would prefer hearing it, your more than welcome to come by the pits and see what ya'll think, i've got nothing to hide at the moment as i'll mainly be getting baseline numbers early friday night so i don't hold you other guys up since it gets all serious round 8ish it seems (remember, im the guy that proposed hotlapping from 5-8 when everyone was complaining about it last year and from 8-? let the serious people enjoy there night as well).

I can PM you my cell phone number if you'd like so you could hear it and suggest things, whichever ya'll wanna do.

Thanks again,
Dave

i had this same problem with a f150 351 5 spd. it was the throw out bearing. The sound was like it had a gear drive ( a high pitch whining) so we replaced the clutch on of coarse the bearing as well. the sound was gone afterwards. Of coarse then the Ujoint went out since the clutch would hit even harder:D Daddy was pissed:dunno:

i figured it was the throwout bearing, as ive had this problem in a couple of other vehicles, but i've never heard it whine/grind like that...i pretty much stopped driving it as of late, trying to save it for friday night then let it blow as i won't be needing the tranny after next fri (my HS grad. party, getting a T56 :D)
