OK, time to go to the board.

I have an older GM HEI distributor. I have a 6AL box hooked up like the directions say. But my timing is total shit! I can't get a consistent reading for anything. I even swithched out distributors to another GM HEI (this one with the vacuum advance locked out) and this presented the exact same problem. Before I conclude I need MSD distributor with an MSD box, I am going to put the old Module back in the dist. and see what happens. Has anyone had similiar experience and have any suggestions?

I can't get a consistent reading
 ....................... What do you mean by consistent?
My MSD 6 will move 2 to 3 degrees when I'm setting my timing. :yup:
I just go with the highest number. :yup:

Ah, no dial timing light, OK, thats a start, Cause the light cant' be right, its telling me the darn thing is at 40 degrees at 1200 rpms. I am using a Craftsman light with advance... It would read very spiratic with a reading range of usually 10 degrees put then jump to a 30 or 40 degree spread. But you can hear the car not running righ either, and i have a terrible miss off idle, but once the thing starts spinning, its usually good.

So what type of light do I need to use?

Any type of light with NO advance...i use a 20 year old penske non advance light and the mark is dead on...i tried an advance light on my wifes car and it was jumping all over and was almost 10 degrees off.
