View Full Version : Help me decide which way I should go...

Ok guys / gals, I'm in a rut and can not decide what I should build next. I really want a 78-80 Bu, but cant find anything nice enough or in the right price range in my area. So I have come up with 2 possible solutions and they are as follows:

Option #1:
Neighbor has an 86 Trans Am, non-t-top car, with factory 3.73 disc brake rear and a very clean, rust free body. He is pulling the motor/trans for a Jeep project and want $500. for the body. If it were a Camaro, I'd be leaning more towards it, as I never really cared for the T/A nose. But for the $$, its a hell of a buy and about 30 yards from my driveway as I type.

Option #2:
A friend has an EXTREMELY clean, straight, rust free 1985 S-10 Sport reg cab short bed 2wd with a blown 2.8 and auto. Truck is VERY VERY clean, faded gray paint with a PERFECT black/gray factory Bucket seat interior (almost looks like a GN interior) this was the "Sport" package. And like I said, its PERFECT, no dents, dimples, rust or blemishes and he only wants $300 for it.

I'm just unsure of which I should go with :dunno: So I'm looking to you guys for some suggestions:confused:

Thanks,
Denny P.

I think the T/A's weight will be more evenly Distributed:yup:

Was going to put a 9" in the S-10 and move battery to the bed to help (as little as a help it would be). I was also looking at a 2500 lbs S-10 to a 3500 lbs T/A. Not going to run anything wild in either of them, just a mild sbc.

PROBABLY THAT ALSO. IT JUST SEEMS LIKE MOST GUYS WITH THE THIRD GENS SUSPENSION STYLE CAN GO FASTER.THAN A LEAF SPRING SETUP WITHOUT A MAJOR OVERHAUL.DONT GET ME WRONG I KNOW A FEW PEOPLE WITH THEM THAT HAVE A LOT OF MONEY INTO CHASSIS WORK.BUT THEY ARE PUTTING OUT 1000 HORSE PLUS.THAT STYLE SEEMS TO JUST WORK. PLUS THE TA IS MORE AERODYNAMIC.

Any ideas on how strong the 9-bolt is in the T/A and would a simple spool / axle change cure any weakness issues?

I Went 10.0's 9.90's On The Stock 10 Bolt With Only A Gear Change.

DennyP
12-31-2006, 03:06 AM
Yeah, but that was a standard 7.5" 10-bolt... I dont think this 9-bolt is as strong as the 10 but I may be wrong... What kind of 60' times was it pulling.. and thats a hell of a shot of it on the bumper!

BigMac1971
12-31-2006, 03:11 AM
The 9 bolt as far as i know was a stronger rear end than the 7.5 the only problem with them was there was a very limited selection of gear ratios available for them.
i used to have an 87 iroc and my brother used to have an 88 iroc his had the 9 bolt the only ratios available back then were 3.23 & 3.42 i know they make a 3.70 now but not sure if they have any others available these days.

i'M WITH BigMac on that one.... Parts are limited but it is deffinately stronger than the 7.5".

DennyP. In that pic. I think the 60' was a 1.29. The car had a best of 1.24 60'.

Thanks Mac, If I'm not mistaken, when I ran the VIN at work a few months back on the T/A is showed it has a 3.73 gear from the factory...

That car hooked pretty good trick, I just posted a pic in the garage of our 63 Nova, it ran 10.50's @ 128.++ w/ 1.25-1.29 60'.

Just think Marc. You have raced on over 10 tracks the last 5 years multiple times, and you had your best 60ft and et.s at Hookville US41. Now Bigmac why do you have such a hard time with it? Maybe Bigmac and that Big tire ladder bar car you told Newbomber about are not up to tuning par with everyone else:dunno:
Yea I know I hijacked the thread DennyP But I can do that:p:

LOL.. its all good.. Hi-Jack away...lol

I sold my Hot Rod then moved about 10 min away from US43 Dragway in Lawrenceburg, TN... and now the track is for sale... Huntsville Dragway is just another 20 min away, so I guess I'm ok. I originally grew up in Levittown, Pa. I was 30 min from Englishtown, 40 min from Atco, about 45 min from Maple Grove and about 2 hours from Cecil County.. life was good as a child...LOL

Huntsville is a very nice track for 1/8 mile.... Music City Raceway / Union Hill (or Red Neck HIll as I refer to it) in Nashville is a total shit-hole, dump of a track.. I wont even go there to watch. US43 in Lawrenceburg, TN was/is a VERY nice track, I was the starter there for 3 seasons. But I grew up in the NorthEast and my home tracks were Atco, E-town, Maple Grove & Cecil County all First Class Top Notch facilities. I guess I would consider Bowling Green my home track now.. until we open US43 again anyway.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand... It looks like I'm going to end up with the T/A... its going to be alittle more forgiving as a daily driver on these twisty narrow roads in my area.. a rowdy small block in an S-10 could be alittle touchy when the roads are wet...

But then again, I MIGHT end up with both...lol as long as the wife allows it that is...
